Granite Mountain Lookout

One of the earliest lookouts established by the Forest Service, Granite mountain lookout was originally serviced by a cabin built on the summit.

In 1924 a D-6 cupola cabin was erected at the peak of Granite Mountain where the current lookout resides.

After serving as an Aircraft Warning System (AWS) site during WWII, the lookout was upgraded in 1956 to the present 10 foot L-4 tower.

Granite Mountain lookout has been under renovation for the past few years with hopes to reopen for full service and visitors by 2022 or 2023.

Granite Mountain lookout is reached by hiking Pratt Lake (#1007) trail to Granite Mountain (#1016) trail.  The route is 4.2 miles one way and you gain 3500 feet of elevation on the way up.  The trail is rocky and very open so it can get very hot during the summer.  Camping is not allowed at the lookout itself or on the deck, but the ridgeline and lakes below the lookout have a number of unofficial camping areas. There is no potable water available near the lookout.
